First ER visit
Nathan was complaining of his neck being sore and he had a fever after his nap. Of course Brian and I immediately thought "meningitis!" So since it was a Saturday and we wanted him checked out we headed to Newman ER. After being there two hours and getting a dose of Motrin Nathan was diagnosed with a "bug" and sent home.

VBS
We had a first tonight for both Nathan and I. We went to Vacation Bible School. I helped with the arts and crafts. Nathan could have gone into the preschool class but preferred to stay with me. Here a couple of funny quotes from the evening:
In the middle of the activity for the 3rd/4th graders one child pointed to Nathan and told me "You have a little boy following you around."
While the 5th/6th graders were doing their crafts Nathan sat down and had a chat with Emily B., the mom of two of Nathan's friends. Nathan had lots to share with her about tractors. Patricia L., another teacher, then commented, "Nathan is really coming out of his shell!" Nathan immediately said, "I'm not a turtle!"

On this day. . .
Today the entire family went to our first third Sunday lunch following church. We sat with Ross and Karen McIlvain, Harold and Carlita Luthi, and Virginia Pedroja. We had some wonderful laughs as stories were retold. In the past Nathan and I wouldn't stay for the meal because we wanted to have lunch with Brian at home. But now that B is coming to church with us we can all enjoy the monthly meal.
(The "On this day. . . " notes are mostly my way of keeping track of smaller, but special events that have happened that I want to remember.)

Fear, shame, protection
Tonight we went to Brian's cousin's house for some Chicken House food and to set off some remaining fireworks. Unfortunately the first firework Jordan set off did not do what it was supposed to. Instead of spitting fire up, it spit fire out and straight toward kids, adults, house. I immediately stood up and started running, completely oblivious to the two helpless kids nearby. But Brian was the opposite. He immediately moved to stand right in front of both kids, protecting them. They still cried after it was over while I felt ashamed, but everyone was unhurt.
(This isn't a picture from tonight. But it is one of my favorites of Brian and Nathan.)

Saying goodbye
We kind of reluctantly said goodbye to the RAV-4 this week. I got rear-ended when I was taking Nathan to swimming lessons a month ago which hastened our motivation to get a new vehicle. She was a wonderful car-I brought Nathan home from the hospital in her and she kept Nathan and I safe during two head-on collisions with deer. I could not ask for a better vehicle.
(We have smiles on our faces in the picture but when the time came to transfer all of our stuff from her into the new vehicle I felt emotional.)
Tornado
We finally had reason to use our tornado shelter in our basement last week. Thankfully no tornado in Madison but there were two in Eureka. We hardly saw Brian during the four days following the tornado.
Hello!
It's been a year since I updated the blog. To be honest, I thought I might stop using the blog. But lately I have really wanted to document both the big and little events in our lives, especially since Nathan seems to grow a little more each day.
At 4.5 years old, these are some of the things he is and is not doing:
-He loves to sing. Some of his favorites are: Sugar-So Sweet, Back at Mommas, Exes and Ohs.
-He loves to dance. There for awhile he was dancing to the Gaither's.
-He loves YouTube, especially videos where he watches other kids playing with toys.
-He can't get enough farm toys. (I'm still trying to figure out how he "earned" four farm toys last week.)
-I can't over-state this enough-our son loves to talk. He loves to ask questions. It is very rare for our house to be completely quiet.
-His head perks up and he gets a twinkle in his eyes whenever Brian mentions mowing or weed eating.
-He is very anxious about preschool next year.
-He gets upset if I've dared to do the laundry without him.
-He is in underwear 24 hours a day.
-He's just a real smart kid who keeps us on our toes.
